Trail Maintenance and Restoration Projects
The objective of the FOME & LC trails program is help the FS by maintaining and restoring existing system trails. We do not construct new trails. Of the 230 miles of system trails in the Mount Evans & Lost Creek Wildernesses, many were established by the historical use of the area. Not uncommon of designated Wilderness areas, recreation trails evolve from cattle or stock trails, logging roads and foot paths. But historical trails were not "designed" to withstand the pressures and impacts of nearly 400,000 annual visitors.
Such high visitor use, combined with both natural and man-made events, has significant impact on these trails. Without on-going maintenance, necessary erosion control and clearance of downed trees trails become impassible. Impassible trails result in extensive damage, social trails and diversions. Our trail projects include:
- Restoration
- Erosion control
- Clearing of deadfall and blown down timber
